What Nobody Tells You About Infertility

Some topics are only spoken about in hushed voices. Infertility is one of them.

It gets whispered between close friends, Googled at 2am, cried over in private. And yet it affects 1 in 6 couples worldwide. Meaning someone close to you is probably living through it right now, in silence.

This Fertility Month, we want to change that. To speak clearly, honestly, and with a lot of compassion.

“I thought I was the only one”

That’s one of the phrases we hear most often. Infertility comes with a particular kind of loneliness — partly because it isn’t talked about, and partly because from the outside, everything looks easy for everyone else.

What rarely gets said: the process can be long, emotionally exhausting, and full of ups and downs. And that is completely normal. You are not overreacting, you are not alone, and it is not your fault.

The myths that do the most damage

“Just relax and it’ll happen.” Infertility is a medical condition. It doesn’t resolve itself with a vacation or by “not thinking about it so much.” Saying this to someone going through treatment, however well-meaning, is dismissive.

“It’s a woman’s problem.” False. In approximately 50% of cases, the factor is male. Fertility is a two-person matter, and so is the testing.

“You already have a child, why do you need more?” Secondary infertility — difficulty conceiving after a previous pregnancy — is real and just as valid. Pain isn’t measured by how many children you already have.

“You’re still young, there’s time.” Ovarian reserve declines with age, and there aren’t always visible signs. Knowing your reproductive health early is an advantage, not an overreaction.

The emotional impact nobody sees

Infertility doesn’t only affect the body. It affects relationships, self-esteem, life plans, and mental health.

Anxiety, grief, frustration, and exhaustion are completely valid responses to such an intense process. That’s why emotional support is part of the treatment, not an add-on.

Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.

So, what can be done?

Much more than you might think. Reproductive medicine moves fast, and today there are options for a wide range of situations:

  • Ovarian stimulation and intrauterine insemination (IUI)
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF)
  • Egg or sperm donation
  • Fertility preservation (egg freezing)
  • Preimplantation genetic testing

The first step is always the same: a consultation. No commitments, no pressure. Just information.

You don’t have to figure this out alone

If you’re going through this, or if you suspect something might not be right, talk to a specialist. Don’t wait until you’re “sure” or until “more time has passed.”
