Building a Family Is Possible: Options for the LGBTQ+ Community
June is Pride Month, and at Hestia Fertility we want to celebrate it by talking about something that matters deeply to us: the right of every person to build the family they desire.
Because the desire to become a parent doesn’t distinguish between sexual orientation or gender identity. And today, reproductive medicine has a lot to offer.
What options are there?
ROPA Method One of the most special options for female couples. One partner provides the eggs, which are fertilized with donor sperm, and the other carries the pregnancy. Both participate actively — both are moms from the very beginning.
Gestational surrogacy Widely used by gay male couples and transgender people. A surrogate carries the pregnancy with full information and consent. In Mexico, it’s important to have both medical and legal support from the start of the process.
Gamete donation When one or both partners choose not to use their own eggs or sperm, donation is a safe and effective alternative. Donors go through rigorous health screenings before being accepted.
Adoption A deeply meaningful path, and for many LGBTQ+ families, the one that best aligns with their story and values.
Transgender people and fertility: a decision worth making early
Before starting hormone therapy or surgical procedures, there is the option to cryopreserve gametes — freezing eggs or sperm for future use.
This step allows transgender people to keep open the possibility of biological parenthood later in life, without their transition getting in the way.
This process deserves the same respect, confidentiality, and care as any other consultation. Because your identity and your desire to start a family go hand in hand.
Building a family is possible. And there are more paths than you might think.
Whether through the ROPA Method, gamete donation, surrogacy, or adoption, science and love have a lot to offer. You are not alone on this journey.
