With the rise of social media and hyper-intelligent algorithms, it is common during the journey to pregnancy to end up with a medicine cabinet overflowing with supplement bottles. We see an ad on TikTok or a friend’s recommendation about a supplement that “miraculously” helped them conceive, and our first instinct is to buy everything.

However, when it comes to fertility, more is not always better. Taking an excessive amount of unprescribed supplements not only leads to unnecessary financial expense, but can also be counterproductive or even hazardous to your health.

Overinformation and the Dangers of “Self-Supplementation”

In consultations, it is common to meet patients taking lists of up to 15 different daily supplements. Often, this results in megadoses due to overlapping ingredients (such as taking folic acid in a prenatal, in inositol, and as an individual supplement all at once) or, in more delicate cases, placing unnecessary stress on liver function.

Supplements play a valuable role in reproductive medicine, but they must be evidence-based and personalized to your specific diagnosis and needs.

Which Supplements Actually Have Evidence, and When Are They Recommended?

While the golden rule is always an individualized assessment, key nutrients have proven real benefits:

Folic Acid: The non-negotiable number one. It should be taken at least 1 to 3 months prior to conceiving to prevent neural tube defects.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): Supported by strong evidence to improve egg quality in women of advanced reproductive age, as well as reducing oxidative stress in male fertility. However, for a young woman with good ovarian reserve, that financial investment may not be necessary.

Omega-3 (EPA / DHA): Provides essential anti-inflammatory fatty acids that support reproductive health when dietary intake is insufficient.

Vitamin D: Essential for reversing deficiencies (which are very common); measuring blood levels first allows proper dosage adjustment or discontinuation when optimal ranges are met.

Inositol: Offers significant medical and metabolic support for women with Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (SOMP) or insulin resistance.

The Other Half of the Equation: Male Health

We often place the entire burden of supplementation and lifestyle changes on women, forgetting that the male factor accounts for 50% of reproductive success.

Men also benefit immensely from a comprehensive preconception evaluation. Adjusting their diet, optimizing vitamin D levels, or taking antioxidants like vitamins C and E helps protect sperm quality and the long-term health of the future baby.

Balance Is Everything

Following a preconception nutrition plan should not mean living under a strict, stressful regimen that prevents you from enjoying an ice cream on a Sunday with your family. Protecting your mental health and avoiding extreme stress is just as vital for your journey.

Nutrition and supplementation are here to make your path smoother, not to overwhelm you.

Want to learn how to personalize your habits and supplements without falling for internet myths?

If you want to learn more about this topic and discover the truth behind debates like folic acid vs. methylfolate or popular post-embryo transfer myths, check out our new podcast episode. We sit down with nutritionist Paulina Gracia from the Hestia Fertility team, who explains how to approach smart, stress-free nutrition.
